CIRCULATORY SYSTEM AN OVERVIEW
Figure 1
The circultory system is a body system that transports oxygen and nutrients and waste throughout an organism. There are two types of circulatory systems, open and closed. In an open system, blood isn't always enclosed in the vessels, instead it gets pumped directly to the vital body spaces. An open circulatory system is comprised of a single vein called an aorta, and a tubular heart. In a closed system, the organism has a single pump that directs blood through an elaborate maze of veins and arteries. This system is composed of three main parts known as: pulmonary circulation (lungs), coronary circulation (heart), and systemic circulation. The circulatory system is mainly used for transporting various nutrients, blood cells, oxygen and waste, which aids in the fighting of disease. This system is a very crucial part of the human body, however, many organisms do not develop such an extensive network. By viewing the following slides and tabs, you will be able to understand the different types of circulatory systems in each Phylum
The human heart (Figure 1), is the pump in the human circulatory system. Let's see which creatures in the following phyla contain a circulatory system!!
